Glorious Troodos Nature Trails: 5 Totally Different Walks to Get Your Heart Racing
Love the mountains in the spring? How about walking through wild and wonderful paths that weave through some of the most spectacular spots on the island? We say it’s high time to get your hiking boots on, as we guide you towards magnificent routes, some well-trodden and others more lonesome, but all simply begging to be discovered!

1. The awe inspiring one: Teichia tis Madaris trail

A truly magnificent trail, this one has spectacular vantage points that will leave you wide eyed. Boasting excellent views towards the Mesaoria plain and Morfou Bay, you’re also more than likely stand back in awe of the impressive cliffs that make the trail even more stunning than most, as a whole host of varying rock formations call out for attention.
The trail starts off near Madari fire lookout station and can be accessed by vehicle from the Chandria – Polystypos main road in the direction of Adelfoi peak. The road is surfaced, up to its lower staring point.

2. Awash with beauty: Caledonia trail

With a gorgeous waterfall making this trail one of the most renowned on the island, its fame is one that is certainly well earned, standing as one of the prettiest spots in the country characterised by lush vegetation and the incessant gurgle of the Krios Potamos river.
The walk itself is a truly memorable one, following a scenic – albeit slightly slippery – course along the river, as you stride or trundle over stepping stones and bend over backwards to make way past foliage that so proudly inhabits every inch of the vicinity. You’ll then get to splash about at Caledonia falls, with water falling from a height of 13 metres, while ending the walk at Psilo Dendro in Pano Platres.
The trail is well signposted and begins just off the main Troodos and Platres road.

3. Cultural heritage on foot: Panagia tou Araka- Stavros tou Agiasmati trail

If you enjoy nothing more than a good old walk while seeping up heaps history and culture, then this trail will suit you down to a tee. Giving you the chance to catch a glimpse of UNESCO world heritage at its best, you’ll get to ogle at the churches of Panagia tou Araka (1192 A.D) and Stavros tou Agiasmati (1494 A.D), famed for their colourful frescoes.
Put your best foot forward and you’ll be taking in the splendour of dense pine forests, orchards and old stone terraces galore. That’s not to mention the views: to the east of the trail lies Kionia peak, to the north, Morfou Bay and the Pentadaktylos range, to the west, Mount Olympus, and to the south stretches out the Madari area. The trail starts at Panagia tou Araka church in Lagouthera village at one end, and at Stavros tou Agiasmati Church, 8km from Platanistasa village, at the other.

4. A journey into times past: Artemis Trail

This trail which starts off 300 metres from the junction between the Chionistra road and the Troodos – Prodromos road has something rather special about it that hardly anyone knows about, set to thoroughly delight history buffs. Not just about taking in the beautiful natural world, walk through the route and you’ll come across ruins of rough fortifications built during the final year of the Venetian occupation of Cyprus (1571 AD) by a group of Venetian generals who decided to put up a defence against the Ottomans.
The route goes round Olympos mountain peak (Chionistra) at an altitude of 1850m and provides spectacular views in all directions, while you’ll also spot some rather rare species of flora and rocks.

5. Architectural splendours with every step: Venetian Bridges Trail

Many of you have probably heard of the gorgeous Venetian bridges of the island, but there seems to be a veil of mystery surrounding them, perhaps due to the fact that they are a little off the beaten track, and admittedly, a little hard to find! But set out on this trail and you’ll go right past all three of them: Elia, Tzelefos and Roudia.
Saying that, the route is an exceptionally long one (17 km which takes about 6 hours) so you may want to consider covering just part of the distance. Panoramic views abound here, and you’ll weave your way through dense pine forests, over Arminou dam, past Pera Vasa picnic site, and through Saours farm belonging to Kykkos monastery, past the Cave of Saouris and beyond!
