Christmas is an important holiday season in Cyprus, and the season is characterized by two holidays – Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Traditionally, Christmas Eve in Cyprus begins with parades and marchs in the city, and with people singing Christmas carols from door to door. Christmas Day is celebrated as a family gathering.
On January 5th, a very traditional event takes place. A golden cross is thrown into the sea. Young men swim and try to find the cross. The person who finds the cross and returns it to the priest is believed to have good luck for next year. This tradition is happening in Cyprus as well as in Greece every year.
