Ancient Tombs of Ayios Georgios

With the Paphos district boasting some of Cyprus’ most treasured historic sites, not all of the areas historic splendours are given equal attention.

Next time you’re exploring the west of the island, head towards the village of Peyia and the Agios Georgios Archeological Site. A famous place of pilgrimage, excavations here – which began in the middle of last century – point towards an Early Christian settlement thought to be a first port of call for convoys transferring wheat from Egypt to Constantinople.

Most visitors are fascinated by the necropolis, with intricate tombs carved into the rocks taking you on a fascinating journey into times past.  You can then take a good look at three Early Christian Basilicas and a bath from the 6th century, as well as an extensive unwalled settlement that flourished under Justinian 1 (527 – 565 AD). Near the third ‘Basilica C’, get your cameras ready to take some pictures of an old oil press, well, guest house and courtyard.

In the area you’ll also spot a small chapel founded in the late 13th/ early 14th century, named after Agios Georgios, while there’s also teh stone-built church of Agios Georgios to see which was built more recently.
