An Insider Glimpse into the Agios Theodoros Museum of Rural Life

Very often, when you head into the rural heart of Cyprus, into the less populated and more remote areas that appear to be a world away from the fast-paced towns of the island, you can almost immediately feel the connection with times past. After all, most historic buildings remain practically untouched, village homes feature traditional architectural details, and inhabitants still embrace a far more simple and humble way of life.

Deep in the heart of the Pitsilia region, a lovely museum has managed to capture the real essence of Cypriot rural life in days gone by. Enter the traditional building and you’ll immediately be taken back to times when local folk spent hours on end plowing the land and tending to their animals: a far cry from the modern technology and more sedentary lives we have become so very accustomed to today.

Art lovers will be particularly fascinated by the vibrant artworks of Adamantios Diamantis (1900 – 1994), who owned a home in the village and was inspired by the vibrant colours and natural world of the area, so often depicted in his works.

Interestingly, the museum also sheds light on a pioneering and famous perfume maker, Savvas Savvides, who set up a workshop in the village in the 1920s. Creating his perfumes from essential oils made with the herbs of the area, visitors can take a look at his old books, tools and samples of the herbs that he once used.
